In 1993 the Swiss Federal Railway SBB CFF FFS and the National Italian Railway FS came together to found an operater company of a high speed train circulating between Italy and Switzerland, the Cisalpino SA.
As rolling material the Italian neitech train of the serries ETR 460 / 480 is chosen which was put into operation as the modified serries ETR 470 and in Cisalpino-deisgn in 1997.
Apart from design, interior and exterior the Cisalpino differs from its Italian opposite only in the ability to drive on both, the Italian network with 3 000 Volt D.C. and the Swiss network width 15 000 Volt and 16 2/3 Hz A.C.. One Cisalpino-composition consists of 9 wagons, 3 are first class, 5 are scond class and one is the dinig car.
The trains go from Milano to Zurich, Geneva and Basle. After some time Firenze and Venézia in Italy and Stuttgart in Germany were added in the timetable. Since spring 2000 when the German Neitech-train ICE-T was put into operation, for Stuttgart the Cisalpino is an enlargement up to Milano for the route Stuttgart - Zurich.
